David Gauke was the Conservative MP for South West Hertfordshire from 2005 until 2019. He served in a succession of Ministerial posts in the Treasury from 2010 culminating in him being appointed Chief Secretary to the Treasury in 2016. He was promoted to Secretary of State for Work & Pensions in 2017 and further promoted to Secretary of State for Justice and Lord Chancellor in 2018. He resigned from the Cabinet in July 2019 and lost the Conservative whip in September 2019 as a consequence of voting to block a no deal Brexit. He stood as an independent in the 2019 General Election and came second having obtained 15,919 votes. He describes himself as a ‘pro-business, internationalist, liberal one-nation Conservative’.
