Paul Johnson, the director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies, will share his thoughts on the future shape of the state. Official projections paint a bleak picture of rising costs for health care and pensions, which will force government to make tough choices between raising taxes and cutting spending. But what is the scope for limiting these costs through reform of public services and technological innovations? And how can we reform taxation to make the system more growth-friendly?

In February 2021, Larry Summers – the Charles W Eliot University Professor and president emeritus at Harvard University and former secretary of the US Treasury – warned that fiscal policy and macroeconomic stimulus in response to the Covid-19 pandemic could set off high levels of inflation. Now, with that warning becoming a reality, where is the world economy heading in the short term and how do we tackle the deep-seated economic challenges that existed pre-pandemic?
