Alistair Carmichael has been the Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament for Orkney and Shetland since 2001.

He represents the party as spokesperson for Home Affairs, Northern Ireland and Political Reform. During the 2010-2015 Coalition Government Mr Carmichael was first Chief Whip of the Liberal Democrats from 2010-2013 and later Secretary of State for Scotland from 2013-2015.

Alongside his party work, Mr Carmichael is a board member of the Council for Arab-British Understanding and a Patron of Hong Kong Watch, with an interest in the abolition of the death penalty and the promotion of human rights around the world.
